Covilhã is an inland city located in the Centro Region of Portugal, within the subregion of Beira Interior. Its location near the border with Spain provides an excellent opportunity to explore much of the Iberian Peninsula.
In the 20th century, Covilhã became one of the most developed industrial centers in Portugal. The city’s industry was primarily focused on processing wool from the flocks of Serra da Estrela. This wool-related industrial activity earned Covilhã one of its most famous nicknames: "The Portuguese Manchester".
